For many days now, Sansa had travelled alone. Her paws ached, her throat and mouth were dry and desperate for water. Her usually ruddy colored coat was slightly dirty and the hairs were brittle. She hated how she looked… She hated how she got there more.
Sansa had not started off alone. She once belonged to a proud, secure pack… But unrest within its ranks and their own pack laws had allowed insurrection. Sansa’s father was dethroned, his life stolen after years of leading the pack. Because of succession laws, his killer was made the new alpha, and he took Sansa’s mother as his mate. Her family slowly withered away, the new male’s inexperience leading them to a certain doom. Her brothers attempted to win back the pack, but they failed. Their blood stained the pack lands, brining pain to Sansa and her mother.
The last straw was when her mother passed. Unwilling to become another pawn in the usurper’s plan, she left. For Sansa, the choice was easy: fall with the remains of her pack, none of which were her family any more, or strike out on her own. She chose the latter, and so, there she was… Dying. Slowly. It was incredibly painful, but she refused to give up. There must be a pack somewhere around her that would take her in…
Or perhaps they would offer her a quick death…

It was mid-day, and Sanctum was patrolling the borders around his newly claimed territory. The Rex walked with a regal sense and held his head high, challenging anyone to cross his path. A warm breeze gently parted his fur and carried with it the scent of another wolf. Female and alone. His white ears pricked with interest, as he turned and loped towards the scent.
Topping a small slope he saw her, and slowed to a walk. Waiting and watching, she wasn't much to look at but she could be seeking admittance to lands and to the pack he hope to build. He wondered what skills she could offer Excercitus, would she prove to be a hunter or a fighter? He walked towards her, his head level and eyes challenging.
"State your business, here. These lands have been claimed." He spoke with a serious voice that carried. His gold eyes watched the she-wolf before him, wondering what she would say and how she would react. With any luck she could prove to be useful to his pack and provide a valuable asset.

The scent of a new wolf caused Sansa to jerk her head up, standing at attention when she caught sight of the male approaching her. He was white as snow, his eyes serious and his head held high. Judging by the scent markers left around her, he was the alpha. Why an alpha would be patrolling his own lands, other than to refresh the markers, Sansa did not know, but she knew that now was the moment where she needed prove herself. She had to be valuable… She had to have worth.
The male stopped before her, looking imposing. Sansa tucked her tail slightly between her legs, looking up at the male addressing her so gruffly. She wished she looked better than she did… Half-starved and dirty, she probably looked so undesirable that few packs would take her.
“My name is Sansa… I come from the East. I’m looking for shelter… A home, if you would accept me.” Gingerly, she bowed her head, eyes locked onto the white male’s maw. “I have little to offer… I am the daughter of an alpha pair, my home destroyed. I can hunt small game and know how to keep pups safe. I would gladly guard your mate’s pups and do what I must to protect them. Perhaps, when I am stronger, I could help you patrol your pack lands… I have been walking for days, Sir, my paws near bleeding…”

As Rex of his lands, he had to make calls on whether or not the wolves that he encountered would make good additions to his pack or not. Sometimes these decisions were difficult, other times they were easy. This she-wolf before him called herself Sansa, and didn't have much to offer his pack, yet he felt drawn to give her a chance. His golden eyes locked onto her form as she lay before him, calculating her use and risk to him.
"You hold no extraordinary talent, and you cower before me with weakness. Dig deeper. Tell me if you can stand up to the life of a solider." His tone was serious, but his golden eyes glowed with compassion at her injured form. He couldn't just allow her into his lands, just because she was injured. He wanted soldiers, not a bunch of weak and worthless wolves. The law of these lands didn’t allow for weakness, nor did he.

It was clear very quickly that she was getting nowhere with this wolf. He stared down at her, watching her with those cool eyes. She hated this… She hated appearing weak. Sansa knew in her heart that she not like that, but her appearance was not at all convincing. If he looked closely enough, he would see her ribs, and she was hardly even a shadow of her former self. Sansa wanted desperately to belong… She wanted the stability of a strong pack leader, something she had known earlier in life. This male… He could provide that.
Slowly, she stood up a little straighter, gathering the courage needed to look into his eyes. Her tail remained half tucked between her legs, still trying to display submission before the alpha. “I know that if I am allowed to get stronger… If I can eat and gather my strength… I would gladly do anything for my pack. I would hunt for them. Fight for them. I would die for them… The pack is everything; its survival is paramount. My own… it was destroyed by foolishness and weakness… I would never allow that to happen again.”

Whether is way sympathy or just need that had won Sanctum over, he didn't know. He stared at the she-wolf before him, his mind whirling. It shouldn't take her long to get back on her feet and really who he to deny the first wolf to stray across his borders. Even if she proved to be mediocre in talents, at least she'd be an able solider and sometimes all that was needed was someone who could follow orders. She would need a lot of feeding up, that much was for sure but he was confident that a few good meals and she'd be helping patrol the borders in no time.
"Very well. Welcome home, to Excercitus." He spoke formally, then smiled gently, wagging his tail slightly. He sank to his haunches, awaiting her reply and wondering if she'd be able to hunt something small for herself or if he had to feed her. Either way, she would need just a few days to rest before he began training her.

For a few tense moments, Sansa wondered if she had done enough to impress him. It was already apparent that life within this pack would be difficult, but the white wolf before her seemed amazingly strong willed and secure in his position. He would be a strong leader… Unlike the usurer she ran from not long ago. A strong alpha meant a strong pack. She would be safe here, perhaps even eventually able to earn a rank. She would obey without question…
And then he welcomed her into the pack, and all the tension melted away from her face and body. Her shoulders slumped slightly, her tail starting to wag slowly, and a small smile broke out over her face. She sat down softly, bowed her head to her new alpha. His smile was beautiful… “Thank you, Sir… I promise I will do everything that I can for you and the pack.” Sansa’s ears wilted halfway, the fatigue beginning to set in. “My life is yours… Do with it as you see fit.”

Santcum gave Sansa a long look. He watched her for a moment, as he gathered his thoughts as to what he would say to her next. The air was warm as the sun peaked into the sky. Moments passed as he studied her, trying to decide where she would best fit in the plan of his pack.
"In Excercitus you will be referred too, as a 'probandus'. This means you are a probationary member, in a season you'll be given a chance to rank up to a "bellatorum" or full solider. I trust that you'll be in shape by then to handle the duties of a bellatorum. We do not call the 'alphas' of my pack 'alpha'. My rank is Rex and if I take on a mate, she will be the Regina." He spoke quickly, briskly and quietly. He wouldn't have to repeatedly explain himself to each member, because as word of his pack grew so would word of how the ranks work. He'd only have to do this once or twice.

A bellatorum… It was a strange rank, but Sansa would accept it when the time came. For now, she was probandus, which she assumed would give her more than enough time to gather her strength and impress her Rex. Sansa looked up at him, staring into his face after sitting down to rest her weary legs.
“Of course my Rex… I will grow stronger. I will make you proud.”
He didn’t have a mate…? Her ears perked up, head tilting just a little. He was still young, young enough that he could sire many pups before he became too old. It was a little surprising that someone so strong did not already have a mate… “My Rex… When will you take a mate?” She was curious… She had never met an alpha- or Rex in this case –without a mate.

Sanctum had watched her, as he spoke carefully. She seemed receptive to his leadership and stare up at him with respect. He liked that. At her words he felt a twinge of pride for the new she-wolf, and nodded slowly in acceptance of her words. He watched as her head tilted, and was caught off guard, as he usually was when females spoke, at her next words. When would he take a mate? Well, in all honesty he just hadn't met a she-wolf who interested him. Sansa was bold to ask so directly and that he liked about her. He could see a bright future for this she-wolf, as long as she could remain this curious, dedicated and bold.
"I will take a mate, when the time is right. " He spoke levelly trying not to show just how off guard he had been caught. He didn't shift his gold eyes from her for a few moments after he spoke. Finally he looked away, and looked around them. They were well protected here, as he could see or hear anything approaching. He may as well get comfortable if they were going to talk further.
"You said you came from the East? I assume that travel was rushed since your paws are so damaged?" He asked quietly as he gently probed the history of this she-wolf. He didn't need every detail but he was curious as to where she came from. If she didn't want to talk about it, of course, he wouldn't force her.

She seemed to have caught him off guard, but Sansa hid the little smile that fought to come to her lips, not wanting accidentally insult him. That look on his face… The confusion and the way he spoke a bit more slowly and surely; he reminded her of one of her brothers. How she missed them…
It was almost as though he picked up on that regret and sadness when he asked her about where she came from. For a second, she hesitated, though finally she closed her eyes and thought about the answer she would give him before opening her mouth to speak.
“My father… He was defeated in battle by a younger male of our pack. Our laws were simple… The defeated alpha is killed and the challenger assumes his role. However, this new alpha was an idiot.” Sansa practically snarled the word out, her face contorting with suppressed rage. “He drove my once thriving family into the ground and destroyed us. There were many attempts at removing him, but what he lacked in brains he made up for in brawn… I lost many brothers to him…”
Sansa trailed off and finally opened her eyes, looking back up at the Rex. “When my mother died, I left. I could not and would not abandon her there… I ran for days, and eventually… I found myself here, at your doorstep…” She sighed.
“I hated that wolf… I still do. That is why I said I would do anything for you to ensure that the pack survives; I will not lose another family like that.”

As the Rex listened to the females story of her past, he felt a surge of sympathy. In his life-time he had lost many friends, family and people he generally likes to "idiots." The idiots seemed to be a plague on the world. He inclined his head slightly, his golden eyes softened by the sympathy he felt for Sansa. Sanctum wasn't the most socially comfortable wolf, as he always seemed to just watch and learn rather then directly socialize, but something about the first wolf he had seen in a long time made him want to sit there and simply speak.
"I am sorry for your losses, Sansa." He spoke softly but intensely, no one could doubt the truthfulness behind his words. She may be adamant that no one would hurt his pack and her new family, but he was determined to protect her. The female had seen enough hardship and pain in her life. She needed someone and something good and he'd be sure that she got it. That was the unspoken vow that he made to himself.
